600 meters south from Copacabana, you will find the most enigmatic archeological site: The Hang of the Inca (La horca del Inca), which belongs to the Chiripa culture, since almost 4000 years ago.
The site consist the two independent vertical blocks, the biggest of about 6 m. tall and one horizontal stone. the marks in the vertical blocks refer that possibly there were more stones around. The Spaniards couldn't understand the meaning of the monument, and believed that was a punishment complex of the brave and ferocious Incas. The archeological research proved that these stones pieces were an astronomical observatory where not only could mark the change of season that was use for the determination of moon cycles and eclipse predictions. Every june the 21th the Andean communities commemorate the new year. |
